WEDHS is active in six key areas of work - directly related its strategic aims.

WEDHS Strategic Aims

  • To promote equality and diversity in health and social care research and development in Wales
  • To increase the quality and quantity of research and development that addresses the health and social care issues of BME groups in Wales
  • To increase BME patient, service user, community group and public involvement in health and social care research in Wales
  • To contribute to an evidence base for policy and service development in health and social care in Wales
  • To contribute to the long-term sustainability of WEDHS.

To help you get a global view of our programme, we have provided a summary here. Currently, WEDHS has funding to

1. Design and support multi-disciplinary research
The WEDHS Partners carry out, and support, research based on the most pressing health and social-care issues facing black and minority ethnic people today. These priorities, together with the opportunities we provide for collaborative working through this gateway, help remove many of the traditional barriers to research and development; encouraging more appropriately focused projects which take a wider range of perspectives into account. Look in our Research Portfolio to find out more.

2. Identify, review and use research findings
WEDHS makes sure that research findings are accessible to the people that matter. Our dedicated database of BME studies is a two-way street: allowing people to both find, and publish, information. We also organise, and promote, a variety of events - from informal meetings to seminars - for both the public and professionals; to open up discussion, share information and offer practical solutions. Visit the Library to find out more, go to Get involved or Make Connections

3. Provide and promote research support services
WEDHS puts people in contact with people, and with the best ways of working through our Research Support and Make Connections services.

4. Create working partnerships
WEDHS is making joined-up working a reality - researchers can use this Gateway to make contact with other researchers, with BME patients, members of the public, service users, people working in voluntary and equalities organisations, local authorities, and social services.

5. Enable the exchange of information
The WEDHS Gateway provides the foundations on which to build a communication highway for the research and development of BME health and social care. Look at How We Work - with you and for you.

6. Involve people in research
WEDHS provides the strategies and keys for BME patients, service users and groups to have a voice, and use it. Find out how you can Get Involved and Make Connections to build a stronger - and healthier - BME community in Wales.
