WEDHS invites you to share your language skills and expertise by registering as a facilitator - building bridges between researchers and the people they need to engage with.

WEDHS scoping study, undertaken in 2005, identified communication as one of the research barriers standing in the way of better health and wellbeing for the black and minority ethnic people of Wales.

In many cases, the lack of available interpreters or translators to assist during interviews or data-gathering exercises made it impossible to complete research projects or rendered the findings unreliable.

In response to this problem, WEDHS set up a database for facilitators to register their services here.

Can anyone be a facilitator?

We welcome those who with an experience in conducting community-based research as well as people who can speak fluently in either Welsh or English and at least one other language, and are aware of BME health and social care issues in Wales.

What will be expected of me?

Your role will differ depending on the project, but you will most probably be asked to help organise data-gathering events such as consensus workshops or consultations; to assist during focus groups and to conduct interviews. For translators and interpreters, it will be a bonus if you have relevant qualifications and experience, but we are interested in hearing from all interested persons. Full training packages in core research skills are available.

Will I be paid?

The scheme is for both fee-paying and voluntary work. For interpreters and translators, there is space on the form for you to let us know what you expect to earn or if you are in a position to offer your services for free, but please bear in mind that you will need to negotiate each job with the person in charge. For community-based researchers, payment will vary according to the specifics of the research projects and you will need to negotiate each job with the person in charge. Expenses are usually covered for volunteers - but best to confirm this before you start.

How do I register?

Registering as a facilitator with key language skills is easy; just complete this e-form, include your CV (or tell us about your background and experiences on a separate sheet) and send as directed. Don't forget to provide two referees who can confirm your suitability and skills.
