Past Research
Phase 1 (2005 – 2010)
This phase of our work was funded by the National Institute for Social Care and Health Research Clinical Research Centre (NISCHR), formerly known as the Wales Office of Research and Development in Health and Social Care (WORD). Drawing on the findings of a scoping study conducted in 2005 (Saltus et al 2005), we focused on a number of key areas.
First, on issues regarding the education and training of health and social professionals in Wales, with a study to explore the extent and nature of cultural competency training within social work education in Wales, and another study to explore the Extent and Nature of Education relating to Race and Ethnicity in Pre-registration Nursing Programmes in Wales.
Second, on policy-related issues, with a study that examines Race Equality Schemes and the Health, Social Care and Well-being Strategies produced by Local Health Boards and Local Authorities, with a focus on representation, consultation and collaboration, and another study to map and explore effective engagement and consultation with Black and ethnic minorities in rural areas.
Our third focus has been on the BME voluntary sector in Wales, with a pilot study to explore how to capture and strengthen the research capacity of BME Health and Social Care Voluntary organizations in Wales. Linked to this is a critical review of our small grant scheme, which has enabled us to map the engagement and recruitment methods used by the BME voluntary and community sector.
